Dr. Brian Stone, MD, FACS CEO & Chairman
Dr. Brian Stone's journey began in Birmingham, Alabama, where a simple observation during his medical training would eventually transform clinical research forever. While completing his urology residency at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, he noticed something troubling: significant racial disparities in prostate cancer outcomes among patients of color. This wasn't just a statistic—it was a call to action.
Determined to make a difference, Dr. Stone secured funding for a groundbreaking free prostate cancer screening program targeting men of African descent in New York City. Through partnerships with the Baptist Ministers Association and Prince Hall Masons, he successfully screened over 5,000 men, but the data revealed a deeper problem. Even when controlling for early detection, socioeconomic status, and insurance coverage, outcomes remained poor for African American men with prostate cancer.
The answer became clear: clinical trials lacked diverse representation, making treatment algorithms less effective for underrepresented populations. This revelation sparked Dr. Stone's mission to revolutionize clinical research.
During his tenure at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1994 to 2009, Dr. Stone served in multiple leadership roles across New York City hospitals while working alongside Dr. Harold Freeman at Harlem Hospital. He witnessed firsthand how health disparities affected underserved communities. These experiences led him to co-create the Black Health Network in 1996—the first health information website for African Americans.
What started as a health information platform quickly evolved into something more powerful: a clinical trial management company. When Amgen needed to recruit African American patients for their pivotal prostate cancer trials, they turned to Dr. Stone. Despite the high-risk nature of using research-naïve sites, his innovative approach successfully guided 25 African American urologist investigators to become the highest recruiters of African American patients for the Amgen Abarelix trial.
Today, as CEO and Chairman of TruVision, Dr. Stone continues his mission to ensure clinical research serves all populations. His leadership has transformed how the industry approaches diversity in clinical trials, proving that inclusive research is essential for developing treatments that work for everyone.
